Tailgate Checklist for First-Timers: What to Bring and Plan

Tailgate Checklist for First-Timers: What to Bring and Plan

For a first tailgate, you need four things sorted: where you will park and set up, something to cook or serve, basic gear for comfort and cleanup, and a plan for who is bringing what. Get those right and everything else is a bonus. Below is a practical checklist you can adapt for any game, from a high school stadium lot to a college Saturday.

Before game day

  • Check the rules. Look up the lot or venue policies on arrival times, grills, alcohol, and tent size. Rules vary a lot from place to place.
  • Pick a time. Many tailgaters arrive a few hours before kickoff. Choose a window that works for your group and the lot opening time.
  • Make a head count. Knowing how many people are coming makes shopping much easier.
  • Split the load. Ask each person to bring one thing so you are not carrying everything yourself.

Food and drink

Keep the menu simple. Foods that can be made ahead, held at a safe temperature, and eaten with one hand are ideal. Think burgers, hot dogs, wraps, chili in a slow cooker, chips, and fruit. Bring more water than you think you need.

  • Cooler with plenty of ice, and a second one for drinks so the food cooler stays closed
  • Grill, fuel, lighter, and long tongs if grills are allowed
  • Plates, napkins, utensils, and condiments
  • Trash bags and a roll of paper towels

Gear for comfort

  • Folding chairs and a small table
  • Tent or canopy for shade or rain, if permitted
  • Sunscreen, hats, and layers for weather changes
  • Portable phone charger
  • Tickets, ID, and cash or a card for parking and concessions

Games and atmosphere

A tailgate is a social event, so bring something to do. Cornhole, a football to toss around, and a small speaker for music cover most of it. Wear your team colors, and encourage your guests to do the same.

A simple favor idea

If you are hosting a group, a small favor is a nice touch and does not require much effort. A football sports ring is one idea. Our rings come in US sizes 4 to 15, so you may want to ask guests their sizes ahead of time, or use our size finder to help. The Tailgate 4-Pack at $89.99 works for a small group, and the football ring page shows the design. For more ideas, see our tailgate gift ideas.

Cleanup and exit

  • Pack out everything you brought, including trash
  • Let coals cool fully and follow the lot rules for disposal
  • Plan how you will leave after the game, since lots can be slow to empty
  • Designate a driver ahead of time

If your group is part of a team or club and wants matching rings, our team and fundraiser quote page can help.

Quick answers

How early should a first-timer arrive?

Plan to arrive a few hours before kickoff, but check when your lot opens and any posted rules first.

What is the one thing people forget?

Trash bags and extra water are the most common misses. Pack more of both than you expect to need.

What is an easy tailgate favor?

A small, themed item such as a football sports ring works well. Ask for sizes ahead of time or use the size finder.
